Jakaan Architects, formerly DDC Architects, was approached for the adaptive reuse of an ex-industrial printing factory into a state-of-the-art Bible College, based on a recommendation from a previous client. The site posed the unique challenge of maintaining the original exterior shell while completely transforming the interior space to suit its new purpose. The client envisioned a dynamic space that would include a commercial kitchen, dining hall, administration center for 80 people, residential/staff apartments, and a 500-seat auditorium.
The design centered around an internal street that connected the various facilities and featured a three-storey void to create a sense of openness and flow. One of the standout features of the project was the innovative reuse of the existing printing machine pits, which were cleverly concealed under floor plates and repurposed for storage.
Additionally, the project included a striking 35x1200mm structural steel I-beam that served as the main structural support for the butterfly roof, adding architectural drama and ensuring the integrity of the building. The design successfully balanced the industrial heritage of the site with modern functionality, making it a compelling example of adaptive reuse architecture.
Jakaan Architects delivered a solution that met the needs of a growing community while maintaining the character of the existing structure, blending innovation with heritage preservation to create a transformative educational and spiritual environment.
